Last week I shared my completed Festive Day Mosaic carpet, and I’m still utterly in love with this project. In just three days, I finished the Festive Day Square, the smaller version of the design, and it reminded me exactly why mosaic crochet has captured my heart so deeply.
This particular mosaic crochet technique is truly something special. It incorporates trebles worked to the left, trebles worked to the right, double crochet and treble combinations, and a constant interplay of stitches that creates strong visual impact. It keeps you present, focused, and thinking with every row — challenging in the best possible way.
What I love most is how rhythmic yet demanding the technique feels. It isn’t mindless crochet; it’s intentional, structural, and incredibly satisfying as the pattern starts to reveal itself stitch by stitch.
For this square, I used my own hand‑dyed Pianna Yarns, combining two of my collections:
- SOLOIST (the “white”) — 100% cotton
- DUO (the gold) — a 50% cotton / 50% bamboo blend
Both yarns are 4‑ply, and together they create a texture that I absolutely adore.
The combination works beautifully for more than one reason. First, the contrast in fibre content enhances the stitch definition, giving the mosaic pattern a wonderfully textured look and feel. Secondly — and very importantly — this blend makes it ideal for larger projects like blankets. The cotton keeps the fabric lightweight, comfortable to work with, and easy to wash, while the bamboo adds softness and a gentle drape. The result is a finished fabric that feels luxurious without being heavy.
This project has been a joyful reminder of what mosaic crochet offers: bold design, thoughtful construction, and incredibly rewarding results. I already can’t wait to explore this technique even further.
If you love texture, structure, and crochet that keeps you engaged from start to finish, mosaic crochet truly delivers.
