400 Beanies and Countless Acts of Kindness

There are moments in life that remind us of the strength of the human spirit. For my dear friend, Rosemary Dittmer, one of those moments came when she received the wonderful news that she is currently in remission from cancer. We are both incredibly grateful for this blessing and wanted to find a meaningful way to give back to a community that understands all too well the challenges of a cancer journey.

With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October 2026 as our inspiration, we have set ourselves an ambitious but heartfelt goal: to crochet 400 beanies by 30 September 2026.

Creating Comfort One Stitch at a Time

Anyone who has undergone chemotherapy or other cancer treatments knows how sensitive the skin can become. Comfort is not a luxury—it is a necessity. For this reason, we carefully considered the materials we would use for this project.

Our choice was easy. We selected yarns from the Pianna Yarns DUO and SOLOIST collections, known for their beautiful natural fibers such as bamboo and cotton. These fibers are wonderfully soft, breathable and gentle against sensitive skin, making them ideal for cancer patients who deserve the utmost comfort during their treatment and recovery.

Beyond their practicality, these yarns are available in an array of gorgeous colors, allowing us to create beanies that are not only comfortable but also uplifting and beautiful.

A Labour of Love

This project is entirely self-funded by Rosemary and myself because we believe deeply in making a positive difference where we can. However, we welcome any cash donations from individuals who would like to support the cause.

Every cent donated will be paid over directly to CANSA (The Cancer Association of South Africa), helping to extend the impact of this initiative even further.

The Most Exciting Part of the Journey

While every completed beanie represents hope and care, the highlight of this project will undoubtedly be our trip to Cape Town.

On 14 October 2026, a date that coincides with Rosemary’s scheduled follow-up PET scan, we plan to visit the oncology section at Busamed Paardevlei Hospital and personally hand over our handmade creations to cancer patients.

Rather than simply receiving a donation, patients will have the opportunity to choose their own beanie. We hope that being able to select a color and style that speaks to them will make them feel seen, valued and special.

Sometimes the smallest gestures—a soft beanie, a cheerful color, a warm conversation—can brighten someone’s day and remind them that they are not facing their journey alone.

More Than Yarn

This project is about more than crochet. It is about gratitude. It is about celebrating remission, supporting those still in the fight, and sharing hope through handmade gifts.

We are excited about every stitch, every beanie,  and every smile that may result from this undertaking. Most of all, we are grateful for the opportunity to turn a personal story of healing into a source of comfort for others.
